Koedal is one of the most important totems of the western region of the Torres Strait. Growing up I was always interested in crocs, watching documentaries and reading about them – but that is nothing like what they are like in real life. Of course I’m scared of them, but I’ve always been fascinated by them – something about their incredible power and strength.

A few months ago at low tide a crocodile was always passing through the village at night and I used to go out with my torch to catch a glimpse of him. Even from 15 metres away with me on higher ground my heart was racing when I saw him catch sight of me and lift himself up on his four legs. His strength – no one can beat him. I’ve always liked art and in this work I was playing with simple shapes, not really fixed on any ideas just seeing what came out. At the end of this process I realised that I had made or represented Koedal and his ridged back.
