I want to share our traditional songs and stories with the children of the island, teaching them that everything comes with the seasons – mango season sees flying fox, cockatoo, parrot; squid season sees dragonflies.

Jomen Nona

3 October 1978

Jomen worked in steel fabrication after finishing school in Cairns but has always had a love for drawing and sketching which he has managed to fit in to his spare time.

With no formal art training or qualifications Joemen has recently discovered lino printing which he feels bring his drawn designs to life and allows him to share his stories with a wider audience.

Through his work, Jomen is exploring his bloodline and the stories of how his family arrived on Badu.

The journey has taken him to Samoa, Hawaii, PNG as well as other islands in the Torres Strait. Totems: brown snake, crocodile, tupmul (stingray), dhangal (dugong) I want to share our traditional songs and stories with the children of the island, teaching them that everything comes with the seasons – mango season sees flying fox, cockatoo, parrot; squid season sees dragonflies.
