Ngoeydhu Ulakalal
(Dugongs of Ngoeydhu)
Ngoeydhu is the name of one of our traditional dhangal hunting grounds out the back of Badu Island. It has been used for millennia by my people.
When we go out in the boat we navigate towards the big rock Ngoeydhu, looking at which species are around and what we can hunt.
The hills in the background are locally known as Kamath (Mulgrave Hill) – imagine you are in the boat at Ngoeydhu looking back at the island: this is what we see.
Dhangal live in herds with a Barrakuthaw Garka, the lead male, the Apu and the Kaz (mother and calf) grazing the sea grass together and playing.
I really enjoyed this process because monoprints allow you to experiment with colour. Traditionally on Badu we have worked in lino-print and black and white – I loved having the opportunity to experiment with colour as I worked on this series.
