Woeybadhaw Thonar (Mating Season) For our people, country is always speaking. It talks to us as the Biru Biru (Spintail) migrate from Papua New Guinea in the cool months of August and September, the start of our dry season, and tells us that its time for the turtles to mate.
When the eucalypts bloom with yellow flowers, country tells us that the turtles will have a belly full of woebadhaw (eggyolks). When the Biru Biru make their way back from the south this marks the end of the mating season and the time that the females crawl their way up the beach to lay and bury their eggs. This is also the time when the Thupmul (Stingrays) make their way from the deep water to the shallows.
