Within this image, are designs representing the western Torres Strait island headdress, the dry seasons, the sea, the wind, and the monsoonal rains. The wet season brings the colour green in the form of life to the grass, trees and also the colour of rainbows to the flowers of our island home, Badu. It’s this time, after the rains, when the flowers are blooming, the butterflies are seen in and around our community in abundance. This abundance of butterflies tells us the wind is dropping and good weather is coming providing us with calm, crystal clear waters for good fishing. This gives safe travel to and from home for hunter gatherers in the surrounding seas and islands in search of seafood. Laurie Nona 2011
