Details
Okiew Mal At the age of 14 I was trained by my cousin brother to dive for pearl shell using a helmet. Those days we had to work to support our families we were paid very little money. I trained for 12 months then I was made to skipper Naianga A9 at the age of 15 and later skippered PPL boats. We dived all day we would do one hour long dives it was dangerous being a helmet diver, we walked in an upright position and if the breathing hose got stuck lives were lost and we were paid little money.
